John Bitter and Amy Van Scoik are University of Florida CALS alumni who started the farm on five acres in 2011. With the help of family, friends and members of our local community who joined our CSA, we have grown to 21 acres of certified organic farm land. We are working towards bringing all of that land into production, using methods such as cover cropping and crop rotation to improve and build soil.
Each week we provide about 75 members of our CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) with shares of the farm’s harvest. We also serve four farmers markets, including the Union Street Farmers market, and a few local restaurants. We grow a wide variety of vegetables, herbs, fruits and flowers. We also produce value-added goods like strawberry jam, kim chi, pickles, soap, and art from the farm.
We currently employ four full wonderful time staff with diverse origins including Florida, Michigan, Mexico, and Dominica. As a young business, we strive to offer as many benefits as we can, and plan to offer more in the future. We currently provide paid sick leave and three prepared lunches per week. We also pay all applicable state and federal employment taxes and workers compensation insurance.
We work to feed our community in the way we want to feed ourselves. Our farm is open to visitors by appointment, and during our annual farm tours. We are happy to share information about how your food is grown, and we encourage all farmers market shoppers to ask all producers many questions about the materials and methods used, including pesticides, fungicides, herbicides and synthetic fertilizers. We believe that USDA Certified Organic, with annual independent third-party verification, holds food producers to a high quality and safety standard.
We hope you will make the farmers’ market a primary way that you feed yourself and your family. Take advantage of the abundance our region has to offer and buy local and in season.
Thank you for your support of local & organic farmers!
