The Union Street Farmers’ Market was held for the first time
on April 3, 1996. Formed by a small, dedicated
group of local farmers with the assistance of Ken and Linda McGurn
and the city of Gainesville, the original purpose of the market
was twofold:
- Provide local farmers a new venue to sell their produce at retail
prices
- Create a weekly family-oriented event in the Union Street entertainment
district that would reflect the vibrant diversity of this university
community.
From humble beginnings selling under market
umbrellas provided by the Sun Center, today the market has grown
to fill the Sun Center mall every Wednesday afternoon with 27 show
tents with up to forty vendors selling everything from conventional,
hydroponic and seasonal organic produce to pottery, plants, honey,
fruits, baked goods and other prepared foods, as well as handmade
crafts such as soaps and beeswax candles, and world crafts brought
directly to the market by vendors who have traveled far and wide
to obtain them.
Also, each week there is live acoustic music
on the stage behind the Hippodrome Theatre.
Come
downtown and support local producers, musicians and artisans while
sharing some time with your neighbors!
